Still worried about unauthorized access to your private files on your PC? With Windows 8.1, you can breathe a little easier. A new report from The Verge says that Microsoft is working on including native support for fingerprint readers. Yes, I already wrote about this biometric feature in my previous roundup of Windows 8.1's new features. But what's really interesting is that the software giant is also working on securing individual folders with fingerprint authentication.

The information comes from Michael Niehaus, senior product marketing manager at Microsoft, during Monday's TechEd session. Microsoft also said that in Windows 8.1 (Blue), users will be able to authenticate using a Microsoft account and that they will be able to purchase apps from the Store or sign in to apps simply by using their finger.

Although you'll need to connect a fingerprint reader to your Windows 8.1 PC, the software giant is already recommending that OEMs build fingerprint readers into desktops, laptops, ultrabooks, keyboards and mice to further protect your files.

Update: As it turns out, the fingerprint feature for securing folders will not be part of Windows 8.1. "During the Windows in the Enterprise TechEd session, an inaccuracy was identified regarding fingerprint-based biometrics in Windows 8.1. To clarify, you cannot restrict folders or files using fingerprint access as stated in the session," Microsoft representatives explained.
