How quickly does Windows 8 start?
In the following video, Emily Wilson, program manager of the Kernel Platform Group at Microsoft, demonstrates how to bring a computer from a completely powered off state to a boot-up state in just under 8 seconds.
So how do they do it? In Windows 7, all user sessions are closed, as are services and devices in the kernel session. Now, Windows 8 uses a new fast startup mode that is a mix of traditional cold boot and resume from sleep. The difference with Windows 7 is that instead of closing the kernel session, it hibernates it. By writing the kernel session to disk, it doesn't have to be fully restored every time you boot. This has allowed the software giant to achieve a huge time improvement of 30 to 70%.
