I have been using Windows 8 since it was first released in 2011, but until recently I was still using the PIN password feature to log into the operating system. What I particularly like is that it allows me to access my laptop faster, which doesn't have a touchscreen. What I like even better is that I only have to use the keyboard and as soon as I type the last digit, I'm already at the start screen.

However, I have to say that no matter what device or operating system you use, a PIN password is less secure than a real password mix of numbers, upper and lower case letters and special characters.
I don't recommend using a PIN to log into Win 8 if you're using a tablet or other touch-sensitive device in public where you have major security concerns, because as Microsoft said, smear marks can be visible and potentially give away a PIN or picture password.
