Surface battery tips and tricks – 2021 update!

Surface Book and Surface Pro 4 have been on sale for a few days, but some users have discovered a bug that causes excessive battery drain and excessive heat in sleep mode. The problem appears to be due to a bug in Windows Hello, and some users report that disabling this feature slows down battery drain in standby mode, preventing the device from heating up.

For those who aren't familiar, Windows Hello is a new feature in Windows 10 that allows users to log into the operating system using biometric authentication. On the Surface devices that come with an infrared camera, users can simply log into Windows 10 using facial recognition.

The cause of the problem seems clear, as Windows Hello was not available until the Surface Book and Surface Pro 4 went on sale, so testers were unable to detect the battery drain issue.
