How to manually install Windows updates from the Microsoft Update Catalog
Microsoft reports that 12% of PCs are affected by this installation issue. According to the company, the problem is caused by two errors:
In Build 9879, we introduced new system compression code that systems with SSDs can use to reduce disk usage by the operating system. In some cases, the low disk space detection logic is reversed and we automatically compress in the background.
On PCs with system compression enabled, an additional bug in the way the file system tracks deletions caused the installer to think it couldn't extract the temporary files properly, and the installer therefore failed because it thought it couldn't complete the process.
