Just to clarify, the Surface Ethernet adapter works on Windows RT 8.1, but there seems to be some sort of bug that is causing installation issues for some users. Thankfully, you don't have to wait for Microsoft to release a new Windows update, you can fix the problem right away with the steps below.
1. Connect the USB Surface Ethernet adapter and let the installation fail.
