When upgrading from a new version of Windows, you are always advised (at least by me) to make a full backup of your PC before proceeding. This is just in case something goes wrong and you need to roll back from Windows 8 to Windows 7, for example, and of course to protect your personal files.

How to create a Windows 8.1 image backup (or full backup)
The problem is that after a Windows 8 upgrade with a clean install, you cannot restore certain files from a Windows 7 image (full backup). This means that when you move to a newer operating system, you will need to create a full backup as well as a copy of all your personal documents.
While there's never such a thing as too many backups, you shouldn't have to spend time doing the same thing twice. One simple solution is to create a system image and then use the Disk Management console to restore files in Windows 8 from a Windows 7 backup. And it's actually pretty easy to do, as you'll see in the instructions below.
Before we begin, the good news about a Windows 7 backup is that it uses a mix of XML and VHD (Virtual Hard Drive) files to create a copy of the entire PC. Therefore, it is possible to attach the VHD file to Windows 8 as a local drive and extract any file you want.
