How to create a Windows 8.1 image backup (or full backup)

In Windows 7, Windows Vista or even Windows XP (manually), you probably used the Previous Versions feature to create a copy of the files that could be restored in case something went wrong, but it wasn't really intuitive. Windows 8's File History now works on the same principle as the previous versions, but it's much simpler and more powerful.

Note that File History only creates copies of documents and other files located in your libraries, contacts, favorites, and on your desktop. This means that if you have important data elsewhere and want to back it up using this feature, you'll need to move that data to one of the locations just mentioned.

Unlike the Previous Versions recommendation, Microsoft recommends using an external drive or network location (must always be available when a new copy needs to be made) to better protect your data from crashes, data loss, or other problems that may occur when using File History on your system.
