How to shut down a Windows 8, 8.1 PC or laptop using the keyboard

For the nostalgic among you using Windows 8.1 or Windows 10, if you find the OS shutdown process a little odd and miss the old-fashioned Shut Down Windows dialog, you can still use it without changing anything on your system. To do so, simply use the Alt + F4 keyboard shortcut instead of trying to shut down Windows from the Start screen or Power User menu.

The only limitation is that if you have an open window or application, Alt + F4 will close it first. So if you have two applications running and File Explorer is open, you'll need to press Alt + F4 four times to get the Shut Down Windows dialog to appear.
