Following updates released last month, Microsoft is today releasing new updates for five of its core Windows 8 apps: News, Travel, Sports, Maps, and Finance, and most of them include new features.

The most noticeable changes are in the News app. You can now add your own RSS feeds from any website, removing the restriction to the previously limited number of sources (this new feature is clearly intended to help users ditch Google Reader, as the company is shutting down the service in July).

There's a new "Pin to Home" option to send specific sections to the home screen as a small live tile. Now you'll also notice a larger image in the first featured story, an offline reading feature to stay up to date even without an internet connection, and a new customization page is part of the update where you can reorder, remove, or add categories on the home screen.

The News app now supports custom RSS feeds so users can get rid of Google Reader
