Today, Microsoft is announcing that it's now much easier for students to download and use Office 365 for free. The previous Student Advantage program was launched about a year ago to provide access to Office 365 for students at schools that use the product. The problem with the program was that it required the IT department to initiate the service and create an account for each student. Not an ideal solution for schools whose system support engineers aren't ready to get the service up and running.

Today, Microsoft is eliminating third-party vendors and allowing eligible students to sign up and download Office 365 themselves.

The program is only available in the US, but Microsoft will expand it to other markets later this year.
