First of all, the ribbon-style menu that appears above Explorer in Windows 8 was a problem for many users. The software maker has stated on several occasions that the ribbon was only necessary to display features that would otherwise remain hidden and never be used by most users, including tablet users. Many tech-savvy users were not very happy with the ribbon taking up so much screen space.
In the future, Microsoft will keep the Explorer ribbon minimized by default in Windows 8. In addition, users who use the ribbon will notice that a new tooltip appears next to the button with the keyboard shortcut for that action. This way, users will learn to use the keyboard shortcut in the future instead of finding and clicking the button – at least that's the plan. In a new article, Microsoft's Ilana Smith said, "We will reduce distractions and trust users to discover the features themselves by minimizing the ribbon by default."
