Microsoft apparently wants to upgrade as many Windows PCs as possible to the latest version of the operating system, as the company is releasing an update that will automatically upgrade Windows RT devices to the Windows RT 8.1 update.

Previously, the company tried to get users to update manually through the Windows Store. However, this approach confused many users more than it helped them, since updates are traditionally obtained through the Windows Update service. And many users could not find the update in the Store or had a lot of trouble installing it.
Starting July 1, the company will provide an update called KB2973544 for ARM-based devices, such as the original Surface and Surface 2, that will allow users to automatically upgrade from Windows 8.0 to the Windows RT 8.1 update.
This is the same process that Microsoft introduced a few months ago for Windows 8.0 users who want to upgrade to Windows 8.1. In a comment to ZDNet, a Microsoft employee explained:
