We're hearing more and more rumors about the next version of Windows, which Microsoft has codenamed "Threshold," and while there are already plenty of details, the exact release date is still a mystery. Previous information suggested that the release date (timeframe) would be in Spring 2015, but now it looks like the next major Windows update could arrive sometime in 2014.

However, according to Paul Thurrott, it is still too early to say whether Windows Threshold could be released in 2014, despite information from Mary Jo Foley, who previously mentioned that the update could be released in spring 2015.
At this point, it's hard to say who's right and who's wrong. Both sources are very reliable, so it's currently hard to predict when the next version of Windows – which could also be called Windows 8.2 – will be released. So far, we know that Microsoft is planning the return of the Start menu and new changes to Modern apps so they can run on the desktop environment.
So can we really expect Windows 8.2 in 2014? It's certainly possible, as Microsoft has already announced that the company has moved to an annual rapid release cycle starting with Windows Blue. So it's only logical to expect another major update in October or November 2014, but not before the release of Windows 8.1 "Update 1," a smaller update to the operating system.
