Today is Patch Tuesday, the first Windows updates for 2014, and Microsoft is releasing several important updates to fix vulnerabilities in various Microsoft products. This time, no security updates are expected for Windows 8.1 and Windows RT, as the software giant is mainly releasing patches for Windows 7, Windows XP, its Office suite, Dynamics and Windows Server 2003.

Windows XP will receive what is probably the most important update on this first Patch Tuesday of 2014. The Microsoft Security Response Center reports: "The update provided in MS14-002 completely resolves the issue first described in Security Advisory 2914486. We have only seen this issue in conjunction with a PDF exploit in targeted attacks and not on its own. This only affects customers using Windows XP or Server 2003; newer versions of Windows are not affected."

Microsoft is also expected to release a new update for its Surface tablets today, January 14, after users recently complained that installing the previous Surface Pro 2 firmware resulted in some issues, including the tablet going into sleep mode multiple times and the battery draining faster than expected, among various other problems.

The updates will be rolled out shortly and you can perform the updates manually by going to Control Panel and clicking on "Windows Update" and then clicking on "Check for updates". Alternatively, you can wait until the next restart and the updates will be installed automatically.
