It's the month of September, the second Tuesday to be precise, and that means Windows and several other products are receiving new updates. On September Patch Tuesday, Microsoft is releasing four new security bulletins, three of which are rated important and the rest critical. Together, they fix a total of 42 vulnerabilities in Windows, Internet Explorer, .NET Framework, and Lync Server.

The update for Internet Explorer fixes 37 issues. The most important patched vulnerability concerns a backdoor that could allow attackers to remotely obtain information about the target computer. And the remaining 36 vulnerabilities concern Internet Explorer flaws that could allow remote code execution (KB2977629).

The .NET Framework vulnerability fixed an issue that could cause denial-of-service attacks (KB2990931). The Windows Task Scheduler Could Allow Elevation of Privilege vulnerability (KB2988948) was also fixed. It could allow elevation of privilege if an attacker logs on to an affected system and runs a specially crafted application. And for Lync, Microsoft fixed a vulnerability that could allow denial-of-service attacks (KB2990928) on Patch Tuesday in September.
