Last week, Symantec Corp. announced a new virus called Duqu that allows hackers to take control of a remote system and compromise confidential data by exploiting an unknown vulnerability in the Windows kernel. Symantec explained that Duqu is installed when victims open a Microsoft Word document received as an attachment via email. The virus can then spread to other computers. However, most vendor security products can already detect Duqu and prevent its installation.
The software giant has released a temporary workaround that can be applied in any Windows operating system. You can find the fix on the Microsoft support website: A security vulnerability in TrueType font analysis could allow elevation of privilege. And to make it easier, the company has released a Fix it that allows one-click installation of the workaround and is easy to deploy in bulk. "[…] our development teams have identified the root cause of this vulnerability and we are working to create a high-quality security update to fix it," the software maker announced in a blog post on the Microsoft Security Response Center.
Since this is only a temporary workaround, Microsoft is still working on a permanent fix for this security threat that can be delivered as an update.
