Today Microsoft announced many new features for Xbox One, including new titles for 2014 and 2015, as well as significant changes coming to the console later this year. Changes include support for watching videos, listening to music, and viewing photos from USB and DLNA-enabled devices through a new Media Player app.

The good news here is that the software giant has also promised that the Xbox One will support more file formats than the Xbox 360. The company hasn't specified when exactly the Media Player app will be released, but we know for sure that it will be released in the next few months.
Now Xbox One owners can finally play the MKV and AVI files they have stacked up on external hard drives. Initially, however, users will only be able to play the new file types from a USB stick, DLNA support will be added later, and MKV support is expected to arrive by the end of the year.
The following formats are supported by Xbox One for videos, music and photos:
