How to display OneDrive placeholders in Windows 10
Thanks to feedback from the community, OneDrive placeholders will be available again in Windows 10. Microsoft introduced the concept of placeholders for OneDrive back in Windows 8.x. Basically, this feature was intended to store only very small metadata with a thumbnail about a specific file. Then, when you double-click the "placeholder" for a specific file, OneDrive will download the remaining data to make the file usable. This is very similar to files you access through a web browser – you can see a list of files, but you have to click and download the files before you can open them.
One of the benefits of wildcards was that they allowed devices with limited memory to access hundreds of gigabytes while using only a fraction of the local storage, but an internet connection is always required.
The problem with the placeholder approach was that not everyone really understood how the feature worked. For example, many everyday users complained that they could not access their files even though they could see them on their computer. The reason, of course, was that they were offline and had not manually set the files they needed to be available offline.
