Long overdue IMAP support for Outlook.com is finally here, allowing email clients such as Mac and Thunderbird, as well as phones without Exchange ActiveSync (EAS) email connectivity support, to sync with Outlook.com services.

For those unfamiliar, IMAP (Internet Message Access Protocol) is an older protocol that allows cloud services and software to communicate with email servers (in this case, Microsoft Outlook) and sync all activity in your inbox across devices. However, it's not as advanced as EAS, which works in almost "real time," doesn't use much battery on mobile devices, and is network efficient – Microsoft recommends using it whenever possible.

Let's get one thing out of the way right away: if you use a smartphone or tablet, such as Android, iPhone, iPad, iPod touch, Windows Phone or Windows 8 Mail and Outlook 2013, you don't need to worry about configuring this protocol. This only applies to apps, devices or services that are still based on a less sophisticated protocol.
