As you know, Facebook's magical and smart new sidebar is quite annoying for many users and until recently there was no easy way to turn it off, but now things are different! If you notice, there is a new button on the bottom right of the sidebar (see first image below). Clicking it will permanently hide the sidebar. Even if you log out and log back in, it will no longer be there.

Hide Facebook sidebar
If after a while you feel like you want it back, just click on the chat bar at the bottom right of the screen or in the big widescreen, click the button in the left sidebar under the "Marketplace" link (see second and third images below).
I guess after the many user complaints, the many unofficial "apps" for various web browsers that came out to get rid of the sidebar, and other workarounds that popped up on the internet, Facebook finally realized that they were doing more bad than good and in many cases were not improving the user experience with the always-on sidebar – now the lesson is learned!
Having two options to display the sidebar again is still a little inconvenient, but at least it doesn't bother you as much anymore.
