Microsoft has already unveiled the second generation of Surface, and both tablets look very promising. What's interesting, however, is that the company plans to continue selling Surface RTs and Surface Pros alongside the new, updated models, and there's no indication when production of the older devices will stop.

Surface Pro vs Surface RT | Pocketnow

I don't know if Microsoft will continue to build the first generation Surface or if it's just trying to get rid of its inventory. In any case, this got me thinking that for a $100 difference, no one should buy a Surface RT or Surface Pro. And to make that perfectly clear, here's why:

Let's compare Surface RT and Surface 2: Surface 2 is better from the start, as this new tablet builds on the experience of its predecessor. The new device has a much faster processor, although the memory remains 2GB; it has a 1920 x 1080 pixel display compared to the 1366 x 768 pixels of the RT version, and best of all, Microsoft promises a battery life of up to 10 hours, a 25% improvement over the previous version. That may not seem like much, but considering the NVidia Tegra 4 CPU and Full HD ClearType included in the second generation, it's a big improvement. Also, Surface 2 is thinner, just 9mm thick, and weighs just 1.49 pounds.

Now let's compare Surface Pro vs Surface Pro 2: Surface Pro 2 is also better than its predecessor. This tablet is much faster now as it is powered by an Intel Core i5 Haswell processor, which is a 50% improvement over the previous version with the CPU upgrade alone. Panos Panay, Corporate Vice President at Microsoft, also noted at the event in New York City on September 23, 2013 that Surface Pro 2 is 95% faster than any laptop on the market (today) and that is a bold statement. Thanks to Haswell, the tablet also has improved battery life by 75%, giving customers up to 7 hours of workstation performance on a small form factor device, which by the way is getting faster and faster. Microsoft has also improved color reproduction on the screen by 46%, graphics are 50% better and the overall system has improved by 20%.
