Microsoft will end support for Windows 8 two years after the official release of Windows 8.1 – the clock starts ticking on October 18, 2013. The software giant also noted in its updated lifecycle policy that Windows 8.1 will continue to have the same lifecycle as Windows 8, which ends in early 2023.

Windows 8.1 is dead 😭
While this is good information that every user should know, I see no reason why anyone should wait until after October 18, 2015 to install a free update. Windows 8.1 is a new update that aims to fix many of Windows 8's shortcomings. It brings code stability, improvements, and a number of new features to make your PC even more customized to you with new personalization settings. The update (also known as Blue) also brings new apps and better integration with cloud services like SkyDrive, search has been improved with Bing, there's a new Windows Store, and more.
Just as a side note, mainstream support for Windows 8 ends on January 9, 2018, and extended support ends on February 10, 2023.
