To avoid confusion, the Shared Activity plugin does not need to be installed by users. It is a tool that must be implemented by web applications; similar to the "Like" button. Once implemented, it is a one-click process for the user and allows you to manage your privacy settings even when you are not logged into Facebook.com. And the best part: you don't have to go through the nonsensical privacy settings of your FB profile.

Let's take this example: you visited a website that you logged into with your Facebook account in the past, and since you are still logged into the website, you may not want everyone in your Facebook friends list to know your activity. Then here, click on the "Shared Activity" plugin that appears in the bottom left corner of the page and click "Nobody" in the dropdown menu of groups you want to share with.

In a new article, the company explains: “The Shared Activity plugin lists a person's activity published from your app to Facebook, including Open Graph activity, Like button stories, and comment plugin activity.”
