Although the new USB Type-C port removes backwards compatibility with previous ports, the need for a new port is long overdue. In fact, it's been 17 years since the first USB port came out. The change in course won't happen overnight, it will take time, and the USB team will also need to bring in specifications to create adapters for all devices that work with a standard USB port today to allow for a smoother transition.

The news follows the latest update to the USB specification, version 3.1, which doubles throughput from 5 Gbit/s to 10 Gbit/s, increases power output and maintains backwards compatibility with USB 2.0.
