What Microsoft doesn't want to tell you about Microsoft Office

If you've switched to LibreOffice, you'll probably soon come across a Microsoft Office document, spreadsheet or presentation from someone who is probably using Office 2010 or the new Office 365. The downside to this is that Writer, Calc and the other applications default to the .ODS file format, which is different from the .DOCX/.XLSX used by Office. This could cause compatibility issues. The best way to make documents work harmoniously is therefore to configure LibreOffice to use Microsoft's Office file format. This is actually pretty simple:

1. Start any LibreOffice application, in this case Writer, and select Options from the Tools menu.

2. Expand the Load/Save settings and under "Default file format and ODF settings" make sure that "Document type" is set to "Text document" and "Always save as" is configured to "Microsoft Word 2007/2010 XML". In the same way you should configure the rest of the applications (e.g. for Calc choose Spreadsheet and for Microsoft Excel 2007/2010 choose XML etc.). When you are done with the configuration, just save the new settings by clicking "OK".
