I think it is easier and more convenient to back up these important disks to a hard drive in a good image file format such as .ISO. However, the problem arises when you need to install or reinstall a program and you don't have a physical disk.
How do you solve this problem without wasting even more CDs? Well, you need to mount the image file to access the installation. There are many software programs you can use that allow you to mount a CD/DVD image into a virtual CD/DVD drive. Most of them are paid and some are free, but they are not very good. WinCDEmu is a free, very lightweight, open source software for Windows XP, Windows Vista and Windows 7 that allows you to mount an image file by simply double-clicking the file or right-clicking and selecting "Select drive letter and mount".
