Microsoft is making significant changes to reduce the amount of space used by a Windows 10 installation and improve recovery. This means that the upcoming version of Windows is not just about bringing transparency to the Start menu and making cosmetic changes, but much more.

In a new Windows blog article, Microsoft explains the progress made in memory requirements for Windows 10.

The software giant announces that the latest preview version already includes the file compression technique to give users some storage space back. With the help of the new technique, the software maker has managed to reduce the Windows 10 storage footprint to as little as 1.5 GB on a 32-bit configuration and 2.6 GB on a 64-bit configuration. The company also announced that the type of file compression will also be available for Windows 10 for phones in the future.
