Future Windows 10 versions will ship with real Linux kernel for WSL | 24h News

Microsoft will soon include a full Linux kernel in Windows 10. According to program manager Jack Hammons, the company will include a customized version of Linux this summer "to support the latest version of the Windows Subsystem for Linux (WSL)."

Initially, the kernel will be based on version 4.9 of the latest long-term stable release of the open-source operating system, but the company says it will eventually rebase it when "designating new long-term stable releases" to ensure the WSL kernel always includes the latest Linux features and changes.

Similar to the WSL version, Windows Subsystem for Linux 2 does not provide userspace binaries. "Instead, the Microsoft kernel communicates with a user-selected userspace," through installation from the Microsoft Store.
