It has been confirmed that Microsoft will make Windows 10 available free of charge to users of Windows 8.1, Windows Phone 8.1 and Windows 7. However, there is a catch: those who want to upgrade for free must do so within the first year of Windows 10.

How to roll back Windows 10 to Windows 7 or Windows 8.1
Microsoft has not announced a specific release date for Windows 10, but we know from previous information that the release will occur later in 2015, in the fall.
The fact that Windows 10 will be a free upgrade for Windows 7, Windows 8.1 and Windows Phone 8.1 is the first official information we have on pricing. During the press conference, Microsoft did not announce any further pricing strategy for the new version of its operating system.
The software maker also said it would now treat Windows as a service, meaning: "This is more than a one-time upgrade: Once a Windows device is upgraded to Windows 10, [the company] will continue to keep it up to date for the supported lifetime of the device – at no additional cost."
