Although the lock screen in Windows 8 offers a new way to unlock a PC, the ability to personalize it is limited and it doesn't offer many features. In Windows 8.1, the lock screen offers more useful features, such as a slideshow, a camera option for taking pictures, and alarms. It is also possible to answer Skype calls even when the PC is locked.

Review: Windows 8.1, a look at the start and lock screen, new features and apps
You can now change your lock screen settings from the PC & Devices page in PC Settings. Yes, Microsoft decided to rearrange all the Control Panel features and make them accessible from PC Settings – which I think was a smart move to get users more engaged with the Modern UI.
As before, users can select a single image from the PC's hard drive, a network folder, SkyDrive, and Bing, although the Bing app is no longer available in Windows 8.1.
But the most important thing is the new Slideshow feature, which lets users configure multiple sources to display images on the lock screen, including SkyDrive (with multi-account support), local drives (of course), network folders, homegroups, and more. (Check out the image here to get a little familiar with it.)
