Microsoft has been offering SkyDrive as a cloud storage solution for years, but it wasn't until Windows 8 that the service really gained recognition, while Apple's iCloud, Amazon's Cloud Drive and Google Drive captured a large part of the market.

Disable Skydrive integration in Windows 8.1
Now things have changed. SkyDrive is more integrated into Windows 8.1 than ever before, and is practically part of the operating system (though it's worth noting that it's still an app). After upgrading to 8.1, you don't need to install anything, and the new version of the app addresses many of the shortcomings related to giving the user more control over what to sync, managing available storage, and removing the SkyDrive desktop app from the equation.
At first glance, the SkyDrive app looks almost identical to the previous version, but one notable change in Windows 8.1 is the ability to browse files stored in the cloud and local to the PC. The app itself remains fairly easy to use, the thumbnails have been streamlined for better management, and the app commands offer more options than before, including an easier way to rename and delete. There are new options such as Cut, Copy, Paste, Create Online Only (or Create Offline), and the upload options have been replaced with Add Items.
Browsing the cloud and local documents is exactly the same and everything works as expected. Both versions offer almost the same options. You can change the views to thumbnails or lists. The only difference is that SkyDrive offers some additional options.
