As you know, Windows 8 apps are no different from regular apps. An interesting feature of these apps is that even though they don't have a close button, they can be closed in a variety of ways.

How to show all apps on the Start screen instead of live tiles in Windows 8.1

Yes, it's fun (at least to me) to pull down an app to close it, but what about restarting a modern app? Most users just close the app in a way they're familiar with, and then just find the appropriate tile on the Start screen and click it. But in Windows 8.1, there's a faster and easier way to restart apps without having to go back to the Start screen or leave the current screen.

If you want to try this out, here's what you need to do: open any Windows 8.1 app, drag it down, hold it until you see the tile rotate, then drag the app back up, release it and the app will immediately restart, it's that simple. So my best guess is that this is why Microsoft added the extra "hold to close" gesture, which I think is pretty useful.

If you want to check if an app is really restarting, open Task Manager, go to the Start screen, launch the Mail app, follow the instructions I just mentioned, wait for Mail to fully restart, and quickly switch to the desktop. You might then see the Mail process disappear and then magically reappear.
