Although Microsoft is rumored to release Windows 8.1 Update 1 in April, that doesn't mean development can't be completed much sooner. Recently leaked screenshots from WZor suggest that Windows 8.1 Update 1 has reached RTM Escrow status, meaning the features are locked in and testing and shipping to OEMs is next.

Windows 8.1 – From failure to success

According to various rumors, Microsoft plans to deliver Update 1 to PC manufacturers in late February or early March, with users receiving the final parts on April 8, Patch Tuesday, the day when Microsoft releases new updates to fix bugs in Windows, as it does every month.

What will be included in Windows 8.1 Update 1? What is known so far is that Microsoft is focusing the update on making the operating system more user-friendly with a keyboard and mouse. You'll see changes to the Start screen, such as a new context menu for live tiles, a new search and power options right at startup. The apps view will also be improved. The software giant is said to be making Windows 8.1 installation much easier so the operating system fits on smaller and cheaper devices, and much more. There is another leaked version of Windows 8.1 Update 1 (pre-RTM Escrow) floating around the internet and I hear it was compiled on January 30th. It doesn't contain many changes but many websites report that boot-to-desktop is enabled by default – this surprises me as I tested an earlier version that booted directly to the Start screen.
