In Windows 8, tiled apps work very differently than in Windows 7. You don't technically have to close them, but they go into a suspended state when the end user switches between apps. This is how it will work going forward, and Windows will decide how best to optimize system resources.

When the user opens a new tile app or switches to a new one, the system gives about 5 seconds to save settings or perform other cleanup work. Then the app goes into sleep mode. It still consumes system memory, but now uses all CPU cycles. If the system needs to free up resources, it closes the suspended apps to free up more system resources.

For example, if you have 7 tile apps that are suspended and the app history is set to 3, if the system needs more resources, it will compare the 4 oldest apps to see which one is using the most resources and then kill it. The only apps currently running are the ones you are actively using.

However, in Windows 8, you can still close tile apps or other app types in the same way you can now in Windows 7 using the redesigned Task Manager.
