In December 2013, Net Applications reported that both Windows 8 and Windows 8.1 combined exceeded the 10% operating system market share. Windows 8 ended 2013 with 6.89% and Windows 8.1 with 3.6%, for a total market share of 10.49%.

On the other hand, in the last month of 2013 – 95 days before the end of official support (at the time of writing this article) – Windows XP fell below 30%, leaving the popular operating system with 28.98%; that's a 2.34% difference from November 2013 data. Windows 7, which seems to be the logical upgrade for many Windows XP users, gained 0.88% market share during the same period. Although the numbers are not what Microsoft wanted, the data shows that Windows 8 and Windows 8.1 are slowly growing and Windows XP is finally declining rapidly.

What is really surprising is the figure for Windows 8. The operating system grew by 0.23% in December 2013, even though Windows 8.1 has been available since October 2013 and is a free update. The reason for this is probably that the figure comes from new Windows PCs that did not ship with an updated operating system.

So these are the numbers at the beginning of the new year (2014). Now it will be interesting to see how the market shares fall or rise after Microsoft released the upcoming Windows update "Threshold" which is rumored to bring the Start menu and many other well-known features to Windows 8.2 later this year.
